Mark Amerika

For the next couple of months Mark Amerika is a visiting artist in residence at UTS. I went along to his talk last night… a student seminar class. He presented his most celebrated triology of works, - GRAMMATRON, PHON:E:ME, FILMTEXT with riffs on ideas and concepts underlining both his thinking at the time, and weaving an adhoc history of net art as it was.
Using an eclectic mix of art, artists (like Vito Acconci and Joseph Beuys) and the very inspiring Gregory Ulmer’s theories, he presented a compelling story of an internet/cross-media art practice based on a concept of ‘expanded writing’. Very exciting stuff - there’s not enough of it.
He’ll be giving a public talk October 10.. I think.
